Otago Polytechnic

Computing and Information Technology

Maybe you should study IT.  Computers. Smart devices. Robots. Artificial Intelligence. Networks. Gaming. Electronics. Programming. Technology. Systems. Software. Hardware.

IT is problem solving and trouble shooting. It’s analytical and critical thinking, creating, designing and building. If you already spend your time gaming and tinkering with technology, why not make a career out of it? Or, if you're looking for something new, why not apply your analytical mind, problem-solving and people skills to a new discipline: IT.

Information technology professionals are in demand everywhere – and the salaries they command proves it.

The information technology sector is constantly evolving, and the roles and skills required are evolving and expanding, too. Communication skills, project management and the ability to work with clients are just as important as coding skills.

IT gives you the skills and flexibility to have the career you want, the way you want. If you want to travel, travel. If you want to stay put, stay put. Get a great job or start your own business. What you do with it is up to you.

Work remotely when you need to. Work on projects to help organisations make better use of technology. The IT foundation skills you gain here mean you get to try all sorts of jobs, create new products and services or try the entrepreneur path.

Game development and design

Forth Street Studios is our game development brand. It’s powered by third-year Bachelor of Information Technology students in collaboration with Communication Design students from our School of Design.

Game Development is a specialist thread in the Bachelor of Information Technology, and with the government’s $10 million investment in Dunedin’s game industry, the BIT is a useful qualification to have if you want to get into this global high-growth sector.

Dunedin is fast becoming the hub for Game Development and Game Design in New Zealand. With companies like Rocketwerkz and Runaway already based here, and the establishment of CODE – the New Zealand Centre of Digital Excellence – Dunedin is where you need to be, and Otago Polytechnic is the launchpad you need for your talent and the skills to get you there.
